The Interdisciplinary Studies category brings together courses that explore the intersection of theology, culture, society, and ministry practice. These courses are designed for students who recognize that faithful Christian leadership requires not only theological depth but also cultural wisdom, social awareness, and contextual sensitivity.

Our Mission
Interdisciplinary Studies courses equip pastors, scholars, and church leaders to minister effectively in pluralistic contexts by integrating:
  • Theological reflection grounded in Scripture and Christian tradition
  • Critical analysis of cultural, social, and historical contexts
  • Practical frameworks for missional engagement across diverse communities
  • Dialogue between Myanmar/Chin perspectives and broader global Christianity

Why Interdisciplinary Studies?
Traditional seminary training often separates theology from culture, abstract principle from lived experience. These courses challenge that separation. They ask: How does the gospel speak into particular cultural moments? How do our social locations shape our theological understanding? What does it mean to be a faithful witness in our diverse world?

Whether you're a pastor serving a multicultural congregation, a scholar interested in contextualization, or a church leader navigating rapid social change, these courses offer tools for theologically informed, culturally conscious ministry.

Course Structure
IS courses are taught in hybrid formats, bringing together learners from diverse regional contexts (North America, Europe, and Myanmar/Southeast Asia). They combine:
  • Live Zoom sessions for discussion, dialogue, and community building
  • Moodle modules with structured learning activities, readings, and reflection
  • Collaborative learning that draws on the lived experiences of participants from different cultures and contexts
  • Assessment methods that integrate analytical rigor with practical application

Interdisciplinary Studies

IS 2310 Human Contexts for Ministry: Culture, Society, and Development

This course integrates sociology, psychology, anthropology, cultural studies, and development studies to equip students for contextually aware ministry. It examines how culture shapes human development, how societies form identity and community, and how ministry engages persons in their full social and developmental contexts. Students are trained to perform a double exegesis: to interpret Scripture faithfully in its own world while reading their own ministry context accurately, and to hold the two readings together without collapsing either into the other.

Central to the course is the CONTEXTS method, an eight-move field framework that carries a student from an initial ministry concern through cultural, social, and theological analysis to a participatory, asset-based response — and then to the question most often left unasked, which is who will own that response after the student has gone.
